Pilot Officer L J McDonald Oratory Contest

History

The McDonald Oratory Trophy was presented to the Union in memory of Pilot Officer Leslie Joseph McDonald, a past Secretary of the Union, who was killed in action on 13 January 1941.

Pilot Officer McDonald was a keen and able exponent of the art of Public Speaking and this annual contest is a fitting tribute to his memory. In addition to his involvement in public speaking, he also served as Secretary of the WSU. The McDonald family have been loyal and enthusiastic supporters of this contest. The contest is open to members of all affiliated clubs

Rules

a. The order of the speakers shall be determined by lot.

b. Contestants shall speak on any person, either living or dead, or on a theme relating to human affairs.

c. Contestants' speeches shall be in the form of an oration, which shall be an original work. The trophy shall be awarded to the contestant who, in the opinion of the adjudicators, best develops and presents his or her chosen subject.

d. Each contestant shall be required to speak for not less than ten minutes nor more than twelve minutes. Any contestant who speaks for less than ten minutes shall be disqualified.

e. There shall be a warning bell at ten minutes, and two bells at twelve minutes to signal the expiration of time.

f. The use of notes will not be permitted.

g. Interjections shall not be permitted.

h. The immediate past winner of the contest shall be ineligible to enter the following year's contest.
